Importing Motor Vehicles or Motor Bikes into New Zealand

Moving motor vehicles and motor bikes to New Zealand is possible provided Customs criteria are met. This service is usually depot to depot meaning the motor vehicle will be collected from your choosen agents depot in New Zealand UK following customs and biosecurity clearance.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is responsible for the certification, registration and licensing of vehicles in the New Zealand fleet. When a vehicle is imported to be used in New Zealand, it must go through a process called entry certification. This process checks the vehicle is in a roadworthy condition, has not been crashed or water damaged, and is legally the importers property.

New Zealand seeks to limit the importation of older vehicles from overseas, which are designed to meet lower safety and emissions standards than newer vehicles. Used imported vehicles must therefore meet a number of international standards and this is determined during the entry certification process. A vehicle that was registered overseas is therefore not automatically able to be registered in New Zealand.

Determining whether a vehicle meets these standards can be a complex task. To assist vehicle importers with this, NZTA has appointed several agents to manage the process. These agents are:

Automobile Association (AA)

Vehicle Inspections NZ (VINZ)

Vehicle Testing NZ (VTNZ)

Safer Vehicle Testing Ltd (SVT)

During recent months, NZTA has dealt with a number of individuals moving to New Zealand who have attempted to bring in a vehicle that doesn’t meet the required standards and therefore have been unable to register their vehicle. They have had to sell this vehicle for parts, or re-export it and buy an alternative vehicle to use. Any questions regarding the importation of your vehicle are to be directed at one of the agents listed above. OSS World Wide Movers cannot be held responsible for any importation that does not meet New Zealand import regulations.
